| Built by long-time Moto Carrera tech & fabricator, Steve Fuentes, the 'Del Mar Special' street tracker idea & design was inspired by many of the similar looking Yamaha twins that have dominated vintage flat tracking for years now at tracks such as the Del Mar mile. | ![]() |

We've had plans to build some of these for the public for
several years but we finally got with the program with just 2 weeks before the
2001 Del Mar event, the first week in October. We started off with one of
Steve's RD350 roadracers, gave it a ground-up
customization that included big 19" aluminum wheels, dirt track tires &
Harley XR bodywork. Kits including pipes, wheels, bodywork & swingarm
are now available from Moto Carrera. Left: Steve Fuentes with the Moto Carrera Del Mar Special in race trim. |
| The bike features a Moto Carrera aluminum swingarm, and our famous Millennium sport pipes, which Steve custom built to both exit the right side. R5 engine covers were used for the factory racer look. The Baja Designs headlight is part of the package but was omitted at the last minute due to an ignition glitch. With a late start, (about 10 days before the show) we were working on it up to the last minute. The several days of hard work & high levels of stress culminated into a few hours of celibration as we turned heads at the prestigious Concours d' Elegance, including those of the judges. Steve's craftsmanship netted him the 'Judges Special' award given to the most outstanding, uncategorized motorcycle. A well deserved congratulations to Steve. |
The bike was literally built at the absolute last minute before the 2001 Del Mar Concours d'Elegance. In fact Steve & Mainor were doing the finishing touches in the parking lot to the amazement of a crowd of onlookers. |
